Explore the innovative work of Cape Town’s top creatives at the Watershed Design Lab. Support local talent in art, fashion, and design
Cape Town’s creative scene is about to get a fresh injection of talent with the arrival of five promising new designers at the Watershed Design Lab. This innovative retail incubator, a collaboration between the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) and the V&A Waterfront, is known for nurturing South Africa’s next generation of creative entrepreneurs.
The 2024 cohort introduces us to Tiger Lily Tots, Thabo Makhetha, Lindo Leather, Meraki Accessories, and Shumba Bags and Accessories. These brands, spanning a diverse range of products from babies’ sensory toys to bespoke womenswear and handcrafted leather goods, were chosen for their passion, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit.
These emerging designers are stepping into the shoes of previous participants who have graduated after extensive training and real-world retail experience. Remarkably, the last group of entrepreneurs generated over R1,24 million in sales while in the Design Lab, showcasing the effectiveness of this unique incubator.
Continuing the trend of success, two of the outgoing participants are set to open their own independent stores at the Watershed in September 2024. Diana Seboke Zitha will bring her innovative crochet creations to life, while Tavengwa Dahwa’s Rainbow Artz will feature his captivating wire sculptures.
The CDI, under the leadership of Group CEO Erica Elk, has been at the forefront of supporting creative careers and SMEs for over two decades. The Watershed Design Lab, located in the bustling, vibrant heart of one of Africa’s most visited districts, is among its most impactful initiatives.
“There is something genuinely fresh and authentic about the products emerging from South Africa today. We are particularly excited to support this new cohort of local entrepreneurs in turning their incredible artistry into commercial success,” says Elk.
The Design Lab goes beyond just selling beautiful products; it’s a living retail ‘laboratory’ where emerging brands gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment. Over the next 16 months, these five new designers will refine their craft, develop essential business skills, and prepare to succeed in the retail world.
Since its launch in 2021, the Design Lab has become a cornerstone for nurturing small business owners, with four to eight designers participating each year. The programme enjoys ongoing support from Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), which helps raise awareness and drive foot traffic to the store.
“Showcasing the best local creative and artisanal products is at the heart of the Watershed’s design. The Design Lab has become an integral part of our DNA, and we’re thrilled to welcome these promising new entrepreneurs. Our goal is to support and grow local design businesses, and seeing some of them transition to full-fledged Watershed tenants is a testament to the programme’s success,” says Alex Kabalin, Executive Manager of Retail at the V&A Waterfront.
The 2024 Watershed Design Lab cohort is ready to make their mark. Don’t miss the chance to discover and support these exceptional local talents as they lead the way in South Africa’s creative future.
