Riverhorse Lodge: Luxury Ecotourism in Greater Cradle Nature Reserve

Experience the Cradle of Humankind’s Natural Beauty

Riverhorse Lodge, a new and unique ecotourism haven, opens its doors in September within the privately owned Greater Cradle Nature Reserve (GCNR), just outside Johannesburg. This exclusive luxury retreat, nestled in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Cradle of Humankind, boasts two renowned paleoanthropological sites.

Situated on the lake’s edge, amidst an indigenous forest and pristine highveld landscape, Riverhorse Lodge offers five en suite rooms, a lounge with a fireplace, and a spacious terrace. The lodge harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings, featuring earth-toned interiors that complement the magnificent paradise outside.

Riverhorse Lodge accommodates a maximum of 10 guests and must be booked in its entirety, complete with a dedicated game ranger and a private chef. Executive Chef Sam Ramokoka, a champion of fresh and locally sourced ingredients, crafts delectable meals, with guest input welcomed for menu selections based on seasonal offerings.

For those seeking adventure, the lodge provides access to two world-famous active paleoanthropological sites, Gladysvale and Malapa, offering insights into the region’s 4.5-million-year history and fossil discoveries. An exclusive guided Human Origins Tour allows guests to explore these sites, including the award-winning Malapa fossil viewing platform, a short walk from Riverhorse Lodge.

On the GCNR premises, the Malapa Museum, in partnership with paleoanthropologist Lee Berger’s Foundation for Exploration, National Geographic, and the Cradle Foundation, offers a deeper understanding of the area’s historical significance. Guests can also partake in wildlife expeditions, bush walks, birding hikes, and delve into the region’s natural history.

All of this is conveniently located near Sandton, Africa’s financial hub, making Riverhorse Lodge an ideal haven for nature enthusiasts seeking an indulgent and unique African experience in pristine wilderness.

Notably, all profits from Riverhorse Lodge contribute to ensuring the sustainability of the Greater Cradle Nature Reserve for perpetuity.
